Why this trick works every time
Do you love melon in the summer, but hate when it lacks flavor? Here's a super-quick method to bring out all the sweetness and fragrance of your favorite fruit. A few simple steps, a pinch of salt, and a little resting time are all it takes to transform a somewhat dull flesh into an explosion of flavor. Ready to try?
Step 1: Choose a quality melon
First and foremost, start with a solid foundation: a ripe, juicy melon. We recommend our size 9 Charentais melon , bursting with sunshine and picked at the perfect time. For a touch of color, also take a look at our sweet yellow melon .
Step 2: Express preparation
- Wash your melon thoroughly and cut it in half.
- Remove the seeds, then slice the flesh into even slices.
- Place the slices in a deep dish, flesh side up.
Step 3: The little secret that changes everything
Lightly sprinkle each slice with a pinch of fine salt—no more than a tiny knife tip. The salt will draw out the natural flavors and amplify the sweetness. You can also add a touch of whole cane sugar for a light caramelized effect.
Step 4: Resting time and serving
Cover the dish and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes at room temperature. The slices will release a fragrant syrup in which the melon will macerate slightly. When ready to serve, drain off any excess liquid or slide the dish into the refrigerator for 5 minutes for a refreshing effect.
Bonus: variations and conservation
- Sprinkle with lime juice for a tangy note.
- Add a few fresh mint leaves or a drizzle of balsamic vinegar.
- Store the slices in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 24 hours, flesh side up.
