Summer has barely arrived and tomatoes are taking over our stalls, our plates, our barbecues... and our hearts.

The ultimate fruit and vegetable, it embodies generosity, sunshine, and simplicity. It evokes terrace salads, mustard tarts, and homemade jars prepared by the family. Behind its smooth, colorful exterior lies a thousand-year-old history, a nutritional treasure, and a taste that tolerates only one thing: respect for the seasons.

🍴 How to consume and store it?

Never refrigerate a tomato! ❄️ It would be a crime against taste. It should be stored at room temperature, stem down, away from light. Once ripe, eat it quickly to appreciate all its flavors.

In the kitchen, it is absolutely versatile: raw in salads, roasted in the oven, preserved in olive oil, blended in gazpacho, in pasta sauce... or simply crunched with a pinch of salt. Each variety has its specialty: the beef heart for salads, the Roma for sauces, the cherry for aperitifs.

🧬 Features

The tomato is a fruit with smooth, shiny skin, ranging in color from bright red to yellow, orange, striped green, or even black. Its flesh can be firm, juicy, sweet, or tangy, depending on the variety.

It is rich in lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that's good for the heart, vitamins C and E, and low in calories. It is one of the foods with very high nutritional density. Varieties include Marmande, Noire de Crimée, Green Zebra, Cornue des Andes, and Rose de Berne.

💡 Did you know?

The tomato comes from Mexico, where it was cultivated by the Aztecs long before the arrival of Europeans. It took a while for it to catch on in Europe, as it was long considered… toxic! 😱

Today, it's one of the most consumed fruits in the world. And yet, it's only when it's harvested ripe and in season that it truly reveals its fragrance, its sweetness, its magic. Fun fact: The tomato is the official state fruit of New Jersey and a subject of eternal debate... fruit or vegetable?

💚 Why we love it at Neary

Because it smells like summer, it's a unanimous favorite, it's beautiful, tasty, healthy, and popular. At Neary, we favor open-field tomatoes, grown locally, without forcing.

We choose each variety for its flavor, not its size. The tomato is the perfect example of a product that must be loved, respected, and cherished. At our place, it's no to winter tomatoes, yes to tomatoes in shorts, in the sun, and on your plate ☀️
